First off, we think everyone should be crazy about their fitness. You only have one body, treat it well and it will treat you, your family and your community well! CrossFit has enriched our lives in a newfound way and we want to share this with you! We’re athletes with aspirations and goals just like you. We dread the thought of not being able to do something because of physical limitations. So we challenge our preconceived limitations daily within a community of people who celebrate our strengths and encourage us through our weaknesses, all while getting better every day. We’re progressive, driven and successful people who want to live life to the fullest and guess what? We want you to live life to the fullest too!

We chose CrossFit because we sought the same fitness level that you seek now. It started as an interest in training ourselves in a new way, thus allowing us to better reach our goals. Once we immersed ourselves in CrossFit, our lifestyles started to change and we started making better decisions on a daily basis. Now we seek to improve every aspect of our daily lives through fitness. Through our collective CrossFit experience, we have become better at our jobs, better at the Sport of CrossFit and better people within the community. CrossFit has become a place to go to blow off a little steam, to try things that most adults would consider childish and allows us to test and set new boundaries for ourselves.

  • Jim Caskey Founder and Head Coach

In 2005, Jim was introduced to CrossFit by good friend, mentor and fire fighter, Rob Hole. From this initial CrossFit experience, athletic background and coaching experience with Soccer, Rugby, and Team In Training for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Jim’s vision to Build a ‘FIT’ Community began to blossom. Jim has a passion for improving the quality of life for everyone he encounters and believes that through improved health and wellness all aspects of an individual’s life will improve.

With a belief in himself and driven by results, Jim felt the best way to learn was through action. In 2009, Jim started training athletes out of his garage just like the founder of CrossFit, Greg Glassman. Jim believes dreams can be achieved through action, hard work, dedication, and discipline. It is these qualities coupled with his vision that Jim built CrossFit Matters on. He has a contagious enthusiasm and energy along with a genuine desire to help everyone he coaches. CrossFit Matters athletes know they are under the watchful eye of Coach Caskey every day!

As an athlete, coach and businessman, Jim leads by example and is focused on challenging himself and those around him to pursue excellence. This is evident from his own training and how he founded a company that has impacted the health and wellness of Kansas City. Through Jim’s intense drive and dedication to succeed in life, he laid the foundation, is living his vision and focused on developing a strong team, who are passionate about CrossFit, compassionate for people and dedicated to the company’s vision of Building a ‘FIT’ Community. • Megan Szczygiel CrossFit Coach

In December 2010, a friend introduced Megan to CrossFit. She was skeptical of this “CrossFit” that she had never heard of and did one workout to shut her friend up. After that workout she never looked back.

Prior to this, something was missing in Megan’s life after leaving collegiate sports. She had ran track and played rugby. The elliptical and run of the mill weight lifting routine were not cutting it. She missed the supportive atmosphere of a team and the push of fellow athletes. CrossFit filled this void and that is why she loves it so much.

The community at CrossFit Matters has pushed her beyond the limits she thought she had. She loves that CrossFit is a never-ending battle. There is always something to work on and a new challenge daily. She is always working to be stronger than yesterday! CrossFit changed Megan’s life and she loves being able to share her knowledge to help people reach their goals, live a healthy lifestyle and move more effectively and efficiently. Becoming fit can really change one’s quality of life. Megan wants to be a part of CrossFit Matters mission to Building a Fit Community and making Kansas City better. Her favorite thing is to see people achieve what was once thought impossible. Making people’s lives better is why CrossFit Matters and Megan is here to help with your journey!

  • Rob Schmittgens CrossFit Coach

Rob began CrossFit on January 8th, 2013. On that day, he walked into QTown CrossFit in Quincy, Illinois. It was on that day that Rob’s life was changed for the better. Before Rob began CrossFit he played (that is a liberal use of the word play) baseball at Division II Quincy University. After choosing not play his senior year to focus on applying to law school, Rob quickly saw diet and fitness habits fall by the wayside. Sometime between Christmas 2012 and New Years 2013, Rob came to the realization that he needed to make a fundamental change in his life.

Fortunately, Rob had a few friends that had began training at QTown and Rob made the decision to enroll in their Fundamentals Class. His first CrossFit Coach was Games Athlete Sam Dancer (if you don’t know him, YouTube him). Rob did not just drink the CrossFit Kool-Aid, he chugged the whole gallon. Within weeks of begging, Rob was at the gym two or three times a day training and observing the coaches. When at home, Rob was spending hours on YouTube learning more about proper technique and form.

Fast forward to Fall 2013, Rob began his first year at the University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Law. Even though Rob was a full time law student, he continued his training at CrossFit Matters. Rob loves the community at CrossFit Matters and quickly developed a friendship with coaches Jim, Doug, Kevin, as well as many of the members at CFM.

After training at CFM for nearly a year, Rob approached Jim about possibly becoming a coach and helping to share his passion for CrossFit with Matters’ Community. Jim was open to the idea of Rob joining CF Matters as a coach. Rob received his L-1 Training Certificate in late June 2014. Rob has since begun regularly coaching classes since September 2014.

  • Ian Finch CrossFit Coach

Ian has been involved in various sports competitively from a young age. His most significant is soccer, which he played to a high level and is an FA qualified coach. His love for sport and fitness saw him joining the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a Physical Training Instructor where he completed an advanced national vocational qualification in coaching and instructing as well as other numerous industry recognized qualifications. Delivering training and education to large groups on a daily basis using a variety of methods enabled him to develop instructional techniques of the highest standard.

His commitment to fitness led to him becoming the lead instructor of the pre parachute selection course, an arduous course that all para troopers have to pass before being selected for parachute training. After this, he specialized as a parachute-jumping instructor responsible for training and despatching British airborne and Special Forces in various parachute types.
Ian first discovered crossfit in 2009 and introduced it into his training before fully converting in 2013. He completed his CrossFit Level 1 Certification before leaving the RAF and moving to Kansas City in April 2014. Out of all of the different training methods he has experienced he believes CrossFit is the best method to improve oneself physically and mentally and is passionate about seeing people improve in both ways.
