allyson-nWe would like to start by saying how excited we are to be nominated for Athletes of the Month (and to receive the cute couple award)! CrossFit has changed our lives in a lot of ways, physically, emotionally, and socially. Physically we have both become stronger and more fit than we thought possible, emotionally we have become happier people with CrossFit in our daily routine, and socially we have met so many people through CrossFit that we consider not only workout partners but friends! I think what motivates us both daily is each other. One person is usually pushing the other to go. We also find motivation from our class/team members and coaches. We are always excited to see everyone at the gym! We are looking forward to pushing the limits of our fitness and really trying to make this a lifestyle and not so much just a workout.

1 :: When did you start at CrossFit Matters and how did you learn about CrossFit? – We started at CrossFit Matters in the Fall of 2012. We originally started CrossFit in the spring of 2012 at CrossFit Lawrence. Kyle aka Calves, being the researcher that he is, is always looking for new things to improve his fitness/health. He discovered CrossFit online. After some strong convincing I (Allyson) decided to “try” it. We were hooked after just a few classes, although the soreness was almost unbearable! Once we moved back to KC we knew we wanted to continue CrossFit but did not know where. We decided to try out kyle-hSky’s Limit in Waldo due it being the closest one to us. After 2 classes there we knew it was not a good fit. We were used to getting some one on one coaching in Lawrence and Sky’s Limit being in a warehouse with over 30 people to a class did not offer that. We then decided to not give up yet and emailed Jim at CrossFit Matters! We knew after the first class and how thorough Jim was with technique and safety it was going to be a good fit!

2 :: What is your CrossFit theme song? – It goes something like “ASS, ASS, ASS, ASS, ASS”

3 :: How and why does CrossFit matter in your life? – No matter how bad your day was, once you get to class your whole days turns around. Working out is a miracle worker for the mind and body!

4 :: What is your favorite movement/WOD and what challenges you? – Allyson: Favorite Movement: Thrusters/ Bran
Most Challenging Movement: Overhead Squat
– Kyle: Favorite Movement: Squat
Most Challenging Movement: Anything Squat

5 :: What is your guilty non-CrossFit pleasure? – FOOD!

6 :: What have been some of your achievements since starting and what are your ambitions for the rest of 2014? – Allyson: I am very proud to have made “The Board” twice for top 5 girls. Double unders were a great achievement also. My Ambitions for the rest of 2014 are to stay consistent with my attendance and PR as much as possible, along with getting better at kipping pullups, toes to bar, and overhead squat.
– Kyle: My achievements since starting CrossFit are proficiency on double unders, kipping pullups and overall squat depth. My ambitions for the rest of 2014 are to do butterfly pullups in WODs. Also working on my calf flexibility!

7 :: What is something you would encourage someone considering CrossFit? – To find a gym that fits your needs and don’t be intimidated by the workouts and people. CrossFit takes time just like a sport would.

8 :: What is something others may not know about you? – We are both proud to work for family owned businesses!

9 :: What is your most memorable CrossFit experience? – Pink for Paige was the first charity competition that we both did. We were both very hesitant to do it but once we were done we felt very accomplished and knew we had grown closer with the CrossFit Matters community! Another memorable experience was competing in the Open this year for the first time! It pushed us both but was well worth learning more about competing and doing it with friends!
