dolly-wood1 :: When did you start at CrossFit Matters and how did you learn about CrossFit? A former CFM member and friend invited me to Jennifer and Kevin’s Holiday party a couple of years ago. I walked in and noticed how welcoming everyone was and how good they all looked. It was good motivation but a little intimidating since everyone was younger than me. March will be my 2-year anniversary!

2 :: What is your CrossFit theme song? Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z

3 :: How and why does CrossFit matter in your life? I’m getting older and needed to find something that kept my interest and challenged me. I use to run marathons and had to stop because of my knees. I thought I’d give it a try and it took me a while to get into the groove and commit fully until I did the Lean Santa Challenge and it added an extra day and introduced me to Paleo. I couldn’t believe the difference from 2 to 3 times a week doing CrossFit. I remember Jim telling me, “You need to try adding another day. You can do it.” I am now at 4 times a week and couldn’t imagine doing less.

4 :: What is your favorite movement/WOD and what challenges you? I have a fondness for Push Jerks. My favorite benchmark is Grace. Not a huge fan of double Grace. I’m hoping to RX it someday.

5 :: What movement challenges you the most? Just one?? Box jumps scare the crap out of me. I’m doing them but very slowly and cautiously. I’ve broken the rule a couple times but I’m still going.

6 :: What is your guilty non-CrossFit pleasure? Eating anything with cheese!

7 :: What have been some of your achievements since starting and what are your ambitions moving into 2015? I’m finally able to RX some of the WODs. I’m not as worried about time as I am about challenging myself on some of the movements and weights. I’m excited and nervous for the Open this year. I did it last year and wasn’t sure what it was about. Now I feel I’m more mentally prepared.

8 :: What is something you would encourage someone considering CrossFit? I love that you can modify each movement to your abilities. We have such great coaches here that can challenge you but know how to be smart. Don’t be intimidated. You should remember that everyone has their own goals and not a competition.

9 :: What is something others may not know about you? I was adopted from Seoul, Korea when I was 4 and half years old. I was abandoned and was living in an orphanage. Since I didn’t have a birth certificate, my adopted parents picked a birthday for me and doctors “guessed” how old I was. Horoscopes never work for me and I might be younger than I am!

10 :: What is your most memorable CrossFit experience? It was during the last year’s Open. The WOD was some ridiculous thruster and jump over bar burpee with a time cap. I finished under the time cap, RX’d it, and I didn’t puke or pass out. Which I thought I was going to during the WOD. I realized I was physically and mentally stronger than I gave myself credit for.
