BrittanyHere is a little tidbit about Brittany and her success: What motivates you daily? – I have this mirror that likes to play mind games with me. After a shower in the early morning, it tells me, “Damn, your a sexy b!tch.” I always think to myself that this is the perfect time for an ab selfie. Then later in the evening, before bed, the same mirror tells me to “PUT THAT AWAY! Ugh! What happened today? You should be ashamed.” Every day that shift in my physical appearance reminds me that I no longer have a choice. If I want to keep my morning body, I have to keep doing what I’m doing. But if I want to see changes in my evening body, I have to start working harder. The struggle is real.

I also follow a lot of crazy CrossFit women on Instagram. If that’s not motivating, I don’t know what is. #fearbonerz

What changes you have experienced? – The changes I have experienced are wide spread – both physical and mental in nature. As my dad delicately put it, I now have “man legs.” Others have found more subtle ways to comment on my muscle tone. S/O to Rob for the new “beefy” adjective. The best part about it is that I’m proud of what they are saying and that’s where the mental shift comes in. I no longer care what the number on the scale is and if anything, I want it to be bigger. #gainz

What you are looking forward to? – Rest days. Stringing muscle ups together. More team competitions. All of the gainz. Looking back to my progress over the past year, I can’t wait to see what 2015 has in store for me.

1 :: When did you start at CrossFit Matters and how did you learn about CrossFit? I started at CrossFit Matters in March 2014. Back in 2012, a girl I lifeguarded with when I was 16 posted about CrossFit every day on Facebook (gasp!) and finally posted a Groupon for NKC CrossFit. I bought the groupon with very little understanding of what CrossFit was. Ignorance was bliss and I was hooked.

2 :: What is your CrossFit theme song? Contrary to popular belief in our 5:30 Thursday bro sessions, I’m not a huge Tool fan. Shocker. Gimme some Queen B or basically any other rap song and I’m good. Shain and I are still looking to try out our High School Guilty Pleasures Playlist if anyone is down with some Taking Back Sunday or Blink 182.

3 :: How and why does CrossFit matter in your life? #ballislife. And so is CrossFit. Without it I would have finished House of Cards Season 3 already and I’m sure I would not appreciate the “beefy” adjective in the same way. Through CrossFit, I have found a sense of community that is very difficult to find as an adult. And although I use “adult” loosely, I am very thankful for my friends and teammates who make me want to be better every day. They also threaten to kick my ass if I don’t get better – thanks, Megan!

4 :: What is your favorite movement/WOD and what challenges you? My favorite movement is clean and as I learn better technique on snatch I’m starting to favor it as well. I am constantly challenged when I’m expected to count my own reps but my favorite song comes on. I can’t not sing along.

5 :: What movement challenges you the most? Overhead squat is a huge goat of mine. I won’t waste your time with a list of my other weaknesses.

6 :: What is your guilty non-CrossFit pleasure? Cookies #allday

7 :: What have been some of your achievements since starting and what are your ambitions moving into 2015? Achievements: 95 UB DU, 20# PR for both Front and Back Squat, meeting the Comp Class Standards (except the mile), first MU, first time competing and a recent Rx competition #notsoscaledforlife, plated HSPUs. Goals: 120# snatch, 15 UB butterfly pullups, 300# DL, compete in Olympic Lifting against Toya and Megan J, 5 UB MUs

8 :: What is something you would encourage someone considering CrossFit? If you’re going to join CrossFit, don’t half ass it. Yes, it’s a great way to stay in shape but it can be so much more than that. There is community and with community comes support. Use that support to better yourself. Everyone always says to do it for yourself but sometimes that’s not enough for me. I need to be yelled at and high-fived and hugged and threatened. You’re putting your body through hell and having people there to tell you to keep going is sometimes the only way you will. #justdoit

9 :: What is something others may not know about you? I’m confident that everyone knows every weird thing about me. Why? Because I talk about myself…a lot. To sum it up for those who don’t know – I’m a hobbyist. I like to pick up random things and try them. Some last longer than others. The chickens being the shortest lived (literally) and CrossFit being the longest. Banjo, beer brewing, rock climbing, and screen printing are all somewhere in between.

10 :: What is your most memorable CrossFit experience? Definitely throwing up in a bucket when I first started at NKC. On a brighter note, HOA 6 has been one of the highlights of my CrossFit experience. I did things in that competition that I didn’t know I was capable of and I think others didn’t realize either. #HMDT
